summer 2012 166

This cake is from over 3 years ago!! I don’t think I have posted it before. The best part was the inside, the client wanted it to be just as groovy inside as it was out side. I snapped some pictures before stacking the cake.

So fun right! This next one has a fun story, I got a call from a couple that wanted a cake to commemorate the completion of a goal to visit every city in Utah.  They were going to head out to the last town on their list and it was even going to be covered by one of the local newspapers.   Such a fun idea!

These last two are more recent.  The little red dragon was for my eldest son who loves dragons. If you can’t tell, I made this in a hurry, before the Grandparents and uncles arrived.  The kitchen was a mess but the kid was happy and that is what matters.

Next was an Iron man cake for another of my sweet boys. It was fun and fairly simple.

IMG_1229I have so many cakes that I need to post , owls and race cars and even a snowflake covered wedding cake.  But this Tae kwon do cake is the most recent.  My neighbor and her family are some of my best customers.  This cake was for Peter, an awesome yellow belt, for his birthday party at the Tae Kwon Do studio he attends.  Devil’s food with vanilla buttercream and mm fondant.

IMG_1232I made 25 of these little ninja cuppies.   I should have taken pictures of the process but  it was midnight and i didn’t think of it til I was done.  Would anyone be interested in a little tutorial on how I made them?

A little sign to say it all.

This isn’t quite a tutorial, I just happened to decide to take a few pictures before I frosted this cake, hence the naked shark.  My neighbor has an adorable grandson who was turning five,  and had wanted a shark cake for years.  Together they scrolled through images on line before sending me a picture of an super cute shark cake.   Very cute and inspiring, but I wished I could peek under the frosting and get an idea of the structure of the cake.  So I thought i would save the rest of you out there some figuring by snapping a few before I frosted the cake.  I started with a 14 inch round cake,  carved a giant comma shape out of it and used the reminder to make the tail, fins and head.

I frosted the vanilla cake with vanilla swiss meringue butter cream (the best butter cream for making sculpted cakes ever) and made the mouth, teeth, and eyes with fondant.

I get a lot of hits from people searching for butter cream  cakes.  Which makes me feel a little guilty, since this blog  features mostly fondant cakes and its name is buttercream, so thought I would post something for those seeking cakes in their more natural state.

Many of them have fondant accents that could made with icing instead.  On the pony cake, the pond is made with poured sugar (think lollipops)  with little fondant fishies swimming around underneath.

I had to ask my husband what the coolest fighter jet was, he told me either the F-35 or the F-22.  He also graciously looked up pictures of both for me, or at least he said it was for me, really he just wanted to stare at the awesome air machines, I think.   Anyway this was for a little boy named Ben who was turning five,  I must clarify that it is someone elses Ben, not mine.   The cake was chocolate with swiss meringue butter cream wrapped up in in super sonic steel colored fondant.

Can you tell this was a fun party?  I mean, look at all that ice cream!   It was fun.  My nephew turned two and is very much into CARS right now, hence the Radiator Springs style Lightning McQueen (if you understood that you must have a little boy or two in your life).  The flavors were child friendly too, vanilla cake with milk chocolate ganache.
