Mario gets Married

This was a fun one. The bride wanted a very simple wedding cake and placed her order. Then a few days later she called with the request of an old school Nintendo Gaming system. My family had one of these bad boys and my brothers were awesome at playing Mario, Paperboy, Zelda. I however was terrible! Back to the cakes, the wedding cake was vanilla butter cake with vanilla butter cream on the bottom cake and snickerdoodle cake with vanilla buttercream on top. The grooms cake was devils food with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.

Princess Peach and Mario were provided by the bride and groom. Aren’t they cute?

We all scream for ….frozen cake?

As we all know, it is tradition for a bride and groom to save their cake top until their one year anniversary. Which makes sense, survive what is said to be one of the hardest years of marriage and as a reward you get to eat freezer burned year old cake. The lovely lady that made my wedding cake didn’t agree and sweetly made Dave and I a fresh little cake for our anniversary. It was delightful and a tradition that I gladly follow for couples who order a wedding cake from me.

Last year I made this cake and this year they picked up their complimentary first anniversary cake.

They chose to have it made in our butter vanilla with lemon curd,one of the flavors from their original cake. Happy Anniversary!

Zebra Stripes

This is a 21st birthday cake I did about a month ago. Kaci came up with the entire design right down to the olives. The queen of hearts is hand drawn and completely edible. Inside the cake was red velvet with cream cheese frosting.

Dare to be Square

This cake consisted of 1 six inch square lemon with lemon curd cake and no less than 48 little mini cakes. The mini cakes with purple ribbon were devils food with chocolate fudge filling and the green ribbon had a matching key lime cake with a key lime cream cheese filling. The bride who happens to be a friend of mine wanted to do something that would be fresh and new that most people hadn’t seen before. I think we hit the mark. Congrats Melinda and Dave! We wish you a life of bliss!

Deja Vu

Last year some time I had the opportunity to do a sixteenth birthday cake for Sarah, this year it was her sister Kaitlyn’s turn 16 and have her own sweetheart cake. This cake was butter vanilla with choclate mousse filling covered in swiss meringue buttercream and fondant.

Does this taste Chewy?

Okay, so I just ripped off Cake Wrecks for that title, but it’s funny, right? Anyhow, on to the cake…. Chewbacca, the big lovable Wookie from Star Wars is seen here in chocolate and more chocolate with a little fondant for the accents. I really wanted to put flowers in his hair (fur?) since the cake was for a two year old little girl, but Dave (the Husband) put foot down. I guess it bordered on Star Wars Sacrilege.

A couple weeks ago my neighbor commissioned some bright and happy cupcakes for her daughter. Earlier that week I had the chance of having a great group of girls from church over for a class in fondant decorating. How cute are their cakes!

Naked Shark cake or a semi, kind of, how to…

This isn’t quite a tutorial, I just happened to decide to take a few pictures before I frosted this cake, hence the naked shark. My neighbor has an adorable grandson who was turning five, and had wanted a shark cake for years. Together they scrolled through images on line before sending me a picture of an super cute shark cake. Very cute and inspiring, but I wished I could peek under the frosting and get an idea of the structure of the cake. So I thought i would save the rest of you out there some figuring by snapping a few before I frosted the cake. I started with a 14 inch round cake, carved a giant comma shape out of it and used the reminder to make the tail, fins and head.

I frosted the vanilla cake with vanilla swiss meringue butter cream (the best butter cream for making sculpted cakes ever) and made the mouth, teeth, and eyes with fondant.
