May 2008

We are heading out of town for a nice long vacation so there was no new cake this week but I thought I’d leave you with a quick tip.

If you ever need black icing for design- think tires, roads, team colors, halloween,  start with chocolate frosting.  It will take much less food coloring and taste oh so yummy!

This Tractor cake was for a two year old boy’s birthday, I would have liked to see his face when he saw his green tractor (it had to be green).  It was all chocolate- cake and filling with vanilla butter cream and then covered in fondant.

This was a yummy bug.  Vanilla cake and fresh strawberries and butter cream, covered in fondant.  Oh, and you can’t forget the little licorice antennae.  I love making ladybug cakes because they are always so cheerful and relatively easy to make.

This one was for a 15th birthday.  French vanilla cake with fresh strawberries and vanilla butter cream under fondant.  It was one girlie cake.  The pink flowers are royal icing and the “T” is made with edible pearls, finished a cream colored fondant ribbon.

My neighbor asked me to make a cake for her son who happens to like the Steelers alot.  So after a little internet research, not being a big football fan myself, I made this old school butter cream cake.  My moment of relief was when Dave came home and seeing the cake (before I had written “Steelers” on it) said Hey Steelers!

This cake was made for a kids army themed birthday party (his dad even picked up the cake wearing fatigues). It was chocolate and butter cream and covered in fondant.  This is a cake design by Debbie Brown,  altered a bit with the camouflage.

My Uncle Kevin just turned 50!  For the grand occasion his daughter Season threw a kids party complete with a ring toss and balloons.  I made a dinosaur cake, chocolate with fudge filling and butter cream frosting.  The dinosaur, the yellow cake and the green oval are actually three separate cakes.   Happy Birthday Uncle Kevin!

Here is a topsy turvy wedding cake I did recently.  It was a nice light carrot cake covered in vanilla buttercream and fondant.  The pearls you see are edible and the entire cake was covered in gold luster dust.  Finished off with a black ribbon and a floral cake topper.
